For most environmentalists and animal rights activists it is an almost blasphemous idea to compare the value of one species with that of another, especially when that value is measured in terms of marketing potential for climate change awareness. In recent years, broad media coverage has turned the polar bear into a global symbol for the effects of climate change not only in the Arctic, but in the rest of the world too. In Germany particularly, the birth and highly publicized early life of the polar bear "Knut" at the Berlin City Zoo has intensified this symbolic effect.

ID Database of the lions in the Massai Mara
Living With Lions has now begun the Mara Predator Project (MPP), and is creating an online ID database of the lions in the Mara North Conservancy and surrounding areas north of the Masai Mara Reserve. From this website, you can view profiles and pictures of our lions, and by visiting the blog, you can follow their day-to-day lives. We encourage you to use the database to share your lion sightings with us, so if you have recently visited a camp in the Mara North Conservancy, why not see if you can recognise the lions you've seen? There is information on how to age and identify lions on this site ...
Animals no safer inside Kenya's parks than outside ?
Photograph by Chris Johns/NGSIn Kenya wildebeests, antelope, and other iconic African animals are declining just as quickly in parks and reserves as they are in the country's unprotected lands, a July 2009 study says. The report adds to growing evidence that many of Africa's parks are not having success protecting wildlife.
